Plaice and Mackerel in December, who would have thought it? For many they would be a nice bonus, to go along with a couple of 8lb Cod, but that seems less than likely to happen. This has to be one of the strangest years I have known for fish patterns. Everything has been late by at least a month, so hopefully we might see another run of Cod yet.

We are in for a big blow from tomorrow afternoon, which will make the beach unfishable at times, but come Monday conditions could be perfect. This storm must have been building over the atlantic for a few days, as there was a very big swell when I was fishing yesterday.

Alternative venues to Chesil will be Preston Beach at Weymouth, Hamm Beach in Portland harbour and Poole harbour, all of which are fishing well for Flounder and even some Plaice, as this picture sent in by Leo from Poole shows. Plaice and flounder

The past few years have seen some nice Bass come during Flounder sessions in Poole. Preston beach is producing quite a lot of Whiting.

I have spent quite a lot of time fishing on Portland over the past couple of weeks. It is where I have ben having a lot of success, especially compared to the beach. I fished on one of my favourite marks the other evening, when my friend David came down to practice a few techniques with his new camera. I thought I would share with you a couple of the pictures that he took.

I have a great article for you tomorrow from Loraine. SHhe fished her first match last weekend and has put her experience into an article about preparing for your first match.

Sea Conditions:

Water temperature 10.4*c.

Chesil Beach:  Currently there is a 2m swell, but by Saturday afternoon that could be as big as 4m. The water will then colour up

Portland: 2m swell with lightly coloured water.

Portland Harbour: Wavelets with clear water

Weymouth Bay:  Calm with clear water

Chesil Beach forecast: You will have limited chances to fish Chesil after midday tomorrow, as the wind is forecast to blow fro the SW at 35mph with gust at over 50mph. It does not look that much better on Sunday. However you still have this evening and tomorrow morning to catch a few Whiting and possibly a late Plaice.

I am looking forward to Monday when the wind will drop, but it will still be rough and hopefully full of Bass and Cod.

Portland: Portland has been fishing very well recently and should be good for the rest of today and into Saturday morning. I fished there yesterday for an hour or so, with a mate. It was similar conditions to today as you can see from this video.

When the weather changes the West side and aound the Bill will pretty much be unfishable. However Church Ope Cove and Chine will be good options for sheltered fishing. Target species there will be Bass, Wrasse and Pollock, with the chance of a Bull Huss.

Portland Harbour:Hamm Beach and Sandsfoot Castle are good spots once Chesil becomes too rough. Ferrybridge normally becomes too busy as it is such a small mark. There are plenty of Flounder in the harbour.

Weymouth Bay: Preston Beach will be the most sheltered mark from Saturday afternoon. At this time of year expect small Bass, Dabs and Flounder during the day, and plenty of Whiting after dark.

Poole: Leo managed to get out this weekend, and he reports that the Flounder fishing in Poole harbour is really starting to pick up. Plenty of nice heavy Flounder are showing from all over the harbour. The main problem is getting through the hundreds of tiny Bass. Hopefully that is a good sign for the future of Bass fishing.

Guiding & Lessons: Even though the Bass fishing should run all the way through to mid December and maybe even later, depending on the water temperature, I will be mainly switching to guiding for winter species. Most of my trips will be Wrasse fishing for the large fish from rough ground, , or from the beaches for Cod and Whiting.   Have a look on the guiding link at the top of the page or drop me an email for more details to sean@fishingtails.co.uk
