According to Fishtec, Fishing Tails is one of the best sea fishing blogs in the country. We appreciate the thumbs up for our hard work and hope to get even better over the next year.

There was good Cod fishing on Chesil as predicted. Chris Buxton fished just after the blow on Friday and was rewarded with 9 Cod between 5 and 8lb. All were caught on Peeler Crab and Lugworm

Craig Pope, who fished with Chris also had a good night with several Cod and lots of Whiting.

It looks like the Bass are back in the area. After weeks of the Bass not showing in the numbers and size that we expect at this time of year, the charter boats have found them and some of them are huge. Richard Spracklen managed this 14lb 7oz beauty, which was one of Several landed on Offshore Rebel out of Weymouth.

Big Bass

Lets hope they show from the shore this week.  Looking at the wind forecast for Wednesday onwards, the South Westerly winds that I have been craving for weeks should arrive. I will try and do almost live updates, as conditions change and the Cod and Bass turn up.

As I have been away for a few days, I don’t have that much to report. I will be out filming a Squid fishing video tomorrow and we have a number of good articles including a review of the Rapture Delsol lure rod.

Sea Conditions: Water temperature 14.1°c

Chesil Beach: 1m waves with lightly coloured water

Portland: small swell with lightly coloured water.

Portland Harbour: Calm with clear water

Weymouth Bay: Short surf with lightly coloured water

Chesil Beach forecast: It looks like we will have winds from the SE for a couple of days. This should keep the beach fairly calm and make it ideal for targeting the late Plaice and Mackerel. Evening tides will bring in numbers of Whiting, Pout and Dogfish, with the odd Codling making an appearance. Recent reports show that a number of decent Smoothound up to 8lb have been caught. Most fell to Peeler Crab

From Wednesday onwards it looks a lot better for fishing as the weather becomes windier from the SW. The sea should build quickly. Initially it will be ideal for Bass, then as the water becomes rougher and more coloured the Cod should move in.

As usual, big baits will get you the fish. My current favourite baits are Peeler Crab and lugworm. A Whole Squid or a large Mackerel bait will normally get you the bigger Bass close in.

Portland: While the weather is reasonably calm then the Wrasse fishing will remain good. As the sea builds, there will be a short window for some good lure fishing for Bass.

Once the sea builds, fishing becomes very difficult from most Portland marks. However Church Ope Cove can offer shelter in the worst SW winds.

Portland Harbour: Looks like the harbour could well be worth a try for a Bass or two. In previous years I have had some great catches of Bass on lures and with Squid. I think the Bass chase the shoals of Squid that come inshore.

Weymouth Bay: The piers can provide shelter from the SW winds and with the Squid fishing being good at the moment, it is a mark that I am likely to have a go from at some stage this week. Apart from Squid the pier will produce Pollock, Wrasse and Garfish.

Whilst the winds are still from the East, Preston Beach will produce Bass, as well as Dabs and Flounder.

Guiding:

I have now moved into my winter guiding. This can be a great time to fish with lots of different species around. We are still very much in the best part of the Bass season, especially with lures. I will also be offering Wrasse fishing both on Lures and with bait to target the Big Wrasse that we will start to see soon.

Cod sessions will be starting from the 1st of November, as will general bait fishing sessions. Why not think about a short lesson to improve your casting and fishing skills.

If you don’t want to come to Chesil or Portland then how about choosing one of the other Fishing Tails Guides. Leo covers shore guiding in the Poole and Purbeck area and Anth Constable will be covering the North East. I also hope to add a guide in the Plymouth area very soon.
