Like it or not, but Autumn has arrived. The nights are drawing in and the temperature is getting colder, but don’t let that get you down, Now is the best time of the year for sea fishing and this weekend promises to be a good one. The Bream fishing on Chesil is at it’s best and the Plaice and Mullet are feeding hard in preparation for the winter.

Mackerel are still in abundance, with the Bass moving closer inshore, it’s no wonder I love September and October.

Sea Conditions: Water temperature 16.3°c

Chesil Beach: Slight chop with lightly coloured water

Portland:Small swell and clear water

Portland Harbour: Calm with clear water

Weymouth Bay: Calm with clear water

Chesil Beach forecast: You name it and you are likely to catch it this weekend. Bream, Gurnard, Mullet, Garfish, Smoothound and Cod are just a few that we are likely to get during the day. Night tides will see plenty of Dogfish, Pout and the return of the Whiting.

I mentioned about the Mullet on Chesil. Onc of the best marks for Mullet is Chesil Cove. No need for delicate tactics here. Float fished thin strips of Mackerel work really well. If you get a bit of a ground bait in this will help draw in the Mullet. Bread mixed with Mackerel and some Pilchard oil is brilliant.

Portland: It should be good for lure fishing from the rocks for Pollock and Wrasse. If you want to try for a big Wrasse on bait then get yourself a drop net and catch some hardback Crabs.

Portland Harbour: I expect to see some Bass in the harbour as well as Mullet, especially towards the end of the weekend. Lure fishing is by far the best method.

Weymouth Bay: Top tip! I think we will see some Squid starting to show from the piers in Weymouth. Let me have some pictures if you are lucky enough to catch any. Use Squid jigs for the best chance of catching. We are going to have a couple of Squid articles over the next couple of weeks.

Guiding:

Due to a large number of requests I have freed up a number of additional dates for shore based guiding in the coming 3 months. August to November are by far the best months for fishing, and are normally my busiest times. I will be offering lure and bait fishing for a whole range of species including Bass, Pollock, Rays, Bream, Trigger Fish and Codling.

This year we will be offering boat guiding sessions from your own boat, from Weymouth and Portland and shore guiding in the Poole and Purbeck area. If you want more details then drop me an email to guiding@fishingtails.co.uk
