We are forecast for a calm day today, this could be one of your last chances to get some easy Mackerel before the winds pick up for the next week and make fishing difficult. I have noted that the wind is forecast to be quite breezy and out of the East over the weekend. Anyone that is looking to target a Bass on bait over the weekend should think about a trip to Preston Beach, which will have a lovely surf running by mid morning tomorrow.  This week will be one of the most varied for fishing that I have had in  a long time. I was guiding most of the week, with both bait and lure fishing from the beach and a couple of rock marks including Portland. Today I am out on my Kayak and tomorrow I will be guiding out on a boat. Lets hope today and tomorrow are as successful as the past few days have been for me.

Water Temperature: 16.5*c             Weymouth High Tide: 11.03pm, 1.91m

Wind: There is hardly any wind at all today

Sea Conditions:

Chesil Beach: Calm with clear water

Portland: Calm with clear water.

Portland Harbour: Calm with clear water.

Weymouth Bay: Calm and clear

Chesil Beach forecast: Mackerel are still around and they should be within easy casting distance today. Although reports have been sporadic, when the Bream have been on the feed then anglers have been getting good numbers of them, especially nearer Portland. The rig that seems to be working this week is a 2 hook flapper with short snoods, baited only with Squid. A similar rig with Mackerel also seems to be working for Gurnard. Down the other end of the beach towards West Bexington and Cogden a few more Plaice have come out than did last week. Sole seem to be around in increasing numbers. Black lug or blow lug with size 2 hooks and flowing traces will work. There are lots of Garfish and mullet on the beach at the moment.

Portland: If you are after a good Pollock then fishing all around Portland at dusk with lures will give you your best chance. I often fish down the West side around Blacknor and further towards the Bill. Getting down can be hard work and is not for the unfit, but the results can be amazing. At this time of year I have had sessions where I have had a fish almost every cast, with some being up to 7lb. Jointed lures in orange, Brown and yellow as well as the traditional blue ones seem to work best for Pollock. Plenty of Wrasse around the Bill on soft plastic lures and Ragworm. Mackerel strip float fished on a very short drop will pick up Garfish at any time of the day.

Portland Harbour: Plenty of School Bass and Flounder in the harbour. There seems to be Garfish everywhere at the moment and the harbour is no exception. Lures and small strips of Mackerel float fished will get you an acrobatic Garfish.

Weymouth Bay: Lots of Mullet in the harbour and some of them are huge. They seem to be feeding quite aggressively before they move off to open water. Lots of different species coming from both piers, with sizeable Wrasse and Pollock on the Stone Pier..

Boat & Kayak fishing: Plaice are coming again from the Shambles despite the trawlers trying to wipe out the stocks. I would expect to see some nice Tope coming from the 5 and 7 mile ground and off Blacknor over the weekend. Most people don’t bother fishing for Tope from Weymouth, but at this time of year it can be very productive. Big Mackerel baits, or live Joey Mackerel are the best baits.

I will be launching my Kayak from Chesil Cove today in an attempt to get some fish that I have been thinking about for weeks now. I will let you know how I get on tomorrow.

I have very limited slots available in September for guiding and one to one sessions., but I still have quite a few for October. Don’t miss out on the best months fishing. These can be tailored to your requirements including mixed days of bait and lure fishing. Drop me an email for more details sean@fishingtails.co.uk
